DESCRIPTION:Dr. Sarah Kapnick\n\n\n\nChief Scientist NOAA Department of Commerce \n\n\n\nJoin the MSBR for our luncheon in January with special guest\, Dr. Sarah Kapnick\, kicking off 2024! \n\n\n\nSarah Kapnick\, Ph.D.\, is chief scientist for NOAA. In this role\, Dr. Kapnick is responsible for advancing policy and program direction for NOAA’s science and technology priorities. \n\n\n\nDr. Kapnick has extensive experience at the intersection of climate science and economics. Most recently\, she served as a managing director at J.P. Morgan in the role of senior climate scientist and sustainability strategist for asset and wealth management. While at J.P. Morgan\, she supported sustainability and climate action efforts and served as an advisor on new business and investment opportunities and risks. \n\n\n\nPreviously\, Dr. Kapnick was a physical scientist and deputy division leader on seasonal to decadal variability and predictability at NOAA’s Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL). At GFDL\, her work spanned seasonal climate prediction\, mountain snowpack\, extreme storms\, water security and climate impacts. She was an expert and reviewer for NOAA’s Small Business Innovation Research Program\, a member of its Eastern Region Climate Team\, a science panelist for Climate.gov and the NOAA team lead for the NASA High Mountain Asia Team. \n\n\n\nDr. Kapnick is a member of the American Geophysical Union\, American Meteorological Society and American Association for the Advancement of Science. Prior to her graduate studies\, she spent two years as an investment banking analyst with Goldman Sachs covering financial institutions. Garvin\n\n\n\nSenior Fellow & Chief Scientist\, NASA GSFC \n\n\n\nJoin the MSBR for our luncheon in December with special guest\, Dr. James Garvin presenting “Highlights of Maryland’s Dazzling Year in Space 2023”! \n\n\n\nDr. James B. Garvin is the NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center Chief Scientist. He provides strategic advice and analysis on the scientific priorities and directions to the Center Director and senior leadership\, as well as to NASA Headquarters. As a veteran Earth and planetary scientist within NASA in a career that has spanned more than 37 years\, Dr. Garvin brings his experience with interdisciplinary science and instrumentation in helping to direct the scientific trajectory of the Center. Prior to coming to Goddard\, Garvin served as the NASA Chief Scientist\, advising three separate Administrators on issues ranging from science strategies associated with the Vision for Space Exploration to those involved in rebalancing the NASA science portfolio. In addition\, Dr. Garvin served as the chief scientist for Mars exploration from 2000 until 2004 and spearheaded the development of the scientific strategy that led NASA to select such missions as the Mars Exploration Rovers\, the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter\, the Phoenix polar lander\, and the Mars Science Laboratory (Curiosity rover). He received two NASA Outstanding Leadership Medals for his work with the science behind the Mars Exploration Program. He is also the recipient of three Presidential Rank Awards for his contributions to science at NASA spanning his career. \n\n\n\nDuring his career\, he has been a Co-Investigator on the Mars Observer\, Mars Global Surveyor\, NEAR-Shoemaker\, Radarsat-1\,2/RCM\, Mars Curiosity Rover\, OSIRIS-REx\, and ENVISAT missions. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed scientific articles and other popular articles about space exploration of Mars\, Venus\, and the Moon. Presently\, he is Principal Investigator of the recently-selected DAVINCI mission to Venus\, slated for launch in June 2029\, and the first in situ mission to Venus since 1985. \n\n\n\nDr. Garvin earned his Ph.D in the Geological Sciences from Brown University in 1984 under the mentorship of Professors J. W. Head III and T. A. Mutch. He also received an MS from Stanford University in Computer Sciences and a second MS from Brown in Planetary Geosciences. He graduated with highest honors from Brown University in 1978 and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Trimble\n\n\n\nPolicy Chief and Director of Small Business Programs\, SDA \n\n\n\nJoin the MSBR for our luncheon in November with special guest\, Paula Trimble! \n\n\n\nMs. Paula Trimble is Policy Chief and Director of Small Business Programs at the Space Development Agency in the U.S. Department of Defense. At the SDA\, Ms. Trimble is driving policy solutions to reduce barriers in the acquisition process and enable small businesses and start-ups to work more easily with the federal government. She formulates and leads SDA’s congressional  engagement strategies in support of the annual defense appropriations  and authorization processes\, garnering significant increases to the agency’s budget to accelerate delivery of missile tracking capabilities for the nation. \n\n\n\nMs. Trimble has always been attracted to disruptive organizations at the nexus of policy and technology. She started her career in the Washington\, DC-area as a reporter at Space News and Federal Computer Week. She served in the U.S. Department of Commerce Office of Space Commercialization\, helping promote the expansion of commercial markets for GPS\, satellite communications\, and satellite imagery. \n\n\n\nFollowing that\, she was an industry analyst at the Office of Commercial Space Transportation in the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration\, helping shepherd a new reusable launch sector and supporting the agency during the historic 2004 SpaceShipOne X-Prize flights. Ms. Trimble spent more than eight years overseeing prototyping and experimentation efforts in the DoD’s Rapid Reaction Technology Office. DESCRIPTION:Dr. Mark Clampin\n\n\n\nDirector Astrophysics Division\, Science Mission Directorate\, NASA \n\n\n\nJoin the MSBR for our luncheon in October with special guest\, Dr. Mark Clampin! \n\n\n\nDr. Clampin is the Astrophysics Division Director in the Science Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters in Washington\, DC. The goals of the Astrophysics Division are to understand how the universe works\, understand how we got here and to address the question\, are we alone? \n\n\n\nUntil August 2022\, Dr. Clampin was the Director of the Sciences and Exploration Directorate (SED) at the Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) where he led the Astrophysics\, Solar System\, Heliophysics and Earth Science Divisions\, together with the high performance computing office. \n\n\n\nAt GSFC\, he previously served as the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Observatory Project Scientist\, and subsequently as Director of the Astrophysics Science Division and Deputy Director of SED. Prior to joining GSFC\, Dr Clampin was the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) Group Lead at the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI)\, where he worked on the first four Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Servicing Missions. Dr. Clampin is a Co-Investigator with the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS)\, and the Advanced camera for Surveys (ACS) science team and served as the Detector Scientist\, responsible for the delivery of three focal plane camera systems. His research interests focus on studying the formation and evolution of planetary systems.
